To The Sea, South Georgia Island, 2015

At first glance, I didn’t believe it either. Sure, the penguins in the foreground were easy to see, and an amazing sight unto themselves. But the distant hillside looked like it was filled with rocks, or some other material. But at closer inspection, much to my surprise, those rocks in between the green grasses of the surrounding hills were not rocks at all, but King Penguins. From sea to summit, the breeding pairs of King Penguins were too numerous in number to count. I raised the camera to my face and clicked, hoping it could capture the incredible detail my eyes were seeing. Shot while on assignment for National Geographic.
